An Introduction to our Fishing

Pembrokeshire Anglers Association has 15 miles of prime salmon, trout and sea trout fishing on the Western Cleddau river in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. Our fishing beats stretch from the fast-flowing upper reaches to the tidal areas just upstream of Haverfordwest.

The Western Cleddau River
The whole of the Cleddau catchment is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and carries the European designation of Special Area of Conservation. The Western arm of the Cledau system is home to a wealth of wildlife including otters, kingfishers, herons and a wealth of insect life, amphibians, fishes and small mammals as well as beautiful riverside wildflowers and trees set in spectacular countryside.

Fish stocks
Brown trout of the Cleddau typically grown to half a pound, but many fish of two or three times that size are encountered, particularly on the fast-flowing stretches upper reaches.

Sea trout run from early May onwards, the larger fish tending to appear first, while smaller fish in greater numbers arrive in June and July. Each year a few sea trout over 10 lb are caught on our beats, and fish in the range 2 to 5 lb are most numerous.

Our salmon average 6 to 8 lb in weight, but specimens of 15 lb can sometimes be caught.

Strict bag limits apply for salmon, trout and sea trout, and we encourage members and visitors to join the growing numbers of Cleddau anglers who return to the river the majority of fish that they catch. Stock conservation is a valuable contribution that we can all make to the future of our sport.

Facilities for disabled anglers
Disabled anglers are especially well catered for, with a purpose-built pool, a large fishing platform with easy vehicular access and picnic facilities. This area is located in Treffgarne Gorge.
