Eastern Cleddau site 4, Llawhaden

Llawhaden is a small village with impressive castle remains on a hill near to the Eastern Cleddau river. Nearby Holgan Farm Fishery is a privately owned still-water and river fishery comprising a stretch of the Eastern Cleddau plus three lakes, stocked with carp, tench, crucian carp and a mixed coarse fishery.

Common Carp - picture by Pat O'Reilly Common carp are a popular quarry fvor coarse anglers visiting the Holgan Farm Fishery. The fishing lakes are an ideal feeding ground for kingfishers, which eat small fish up to 7cm long (including some of the baby carp that are born in the lakes).
Mallard ducks - picture by Pat O'Reilly Mallard ducks are less shy than many other water birds, especially in places where they are fed by the public. The male is brightly coloured, with an irridescent green head, while its mate is a more subdued brown bird .
Pond snails - picture: students of Pembrokeshire College Pond snails live at the bottom of lakes, where they graze on algae and vegetation. Many of them are eaten by ducks.

Location
Llawhaden is one mile north of the A40, some 8 miles from Haverfordwest. OS map 158: SN 073175

Access
Wheel chair access. Holgan Farm is accessible by car or bicycle by road. This site can also be reached on foot from Llawhaden village, about a ten-minute walk.  (There is public transport to Llawhaden.) Note that the site is privately owned and there is a daily charge of £7.50 to fish and £2.50 to be on site (2007 prices).

Walks
There is a walk a few miles long from Gelli bridge to LLawhaden. This is important as a point on the Landsker Borderlands Trail, which runs along the eastern bank of the river. The footpath carries on towards Abystree, Dan-y-coed and Llawhaden. The access is restricted as there are stiles to cross to get to the footpath.

Facilities
On-site car parking, snacks and Refreshments, bait and tackle shop, toilets; B&B style accommodation. There is also on-site expert advice on fishing and local knowledge available from the site owner.

Walks
About a one-hour walking around Llawhaden will allow time for you to visit St Aidans Church, the castle, and the pilgrim hospital. There is also a two-hour circular walk from Llawhaden to Gelli and back.
